Inspiration Traitors

So let me waste no more time starting start this blog. The below poem was written three years ago and it's about something that has accompanied me throughout most of my adult life: lack of inspiration. For some reason (life got in the way perhaps) I just couldn't let my creative juices flow for a long time. This poem is inspired by my favorite book ever, Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. There's a chapter about the loss of creativity and how we spend far too much time acting less than we really are or, as in The Ugly Duckling chapter of the book, acting like ducks when we are in fact swans (nothing against ducks though). Enjoy!

Inspiration Traitors

Write, poor tortured soul
For what moves cannot be frozen
So let your thoughts flow, no control
And paper register the words you've chosen

Nevermind the voices in your head
Creativity castrators, inspiration traitors
Follow the path your soul has led
And ignore the ignorant spectators

A duck can't be a swan
It will never understand you
Don't limit your unique One
And be less than you can do

Fitting isn't always the best
For beauty resides in the unique
The pain you feel in your chest
Is the frustration of an oppressed deep.

Dare to be yourself
It doesn't matter what they say
Get out of the gloomy shelf
And shine bright all the way.
