The Loyal Blood

What if your best friend is dangerously obsessed with his girlfriend? You do know there's something about her but you can't explain what... If your gut feeling is right, how far would you go to save him? Check out my story from a prompt in the Daily Prompt app.

The Loyal Blood

I never trusted Kate, had never trusted since I first met her. She reciprocated the feeling, yet my best friend Rick was absolutely mesmerised. I could say that while in his case it was love at first sight, in mine it was hate at first sight. She was gorgeous, I couldn’t deny it, but there was a je ne sais quoi about her that made me dislike her. Something I knew was there but that I couldn’t prove nor explain.

Something in her eyes...

It surely didn’t help that after a few months Rick swapped the beers on a snooker table for fancy dinners with Kate. I was big enough to understand but I kinda felt betrayed. We had been besties since high school and now this diva-looking bitch was taking my friend. Rick was very happy, he wouldn’t stop telling how he had hit the jackpot with this chick but my guts told me a different story. This happiness was... dangerous, a foreboding.

Eventually weeks would pass that I wouldn’t see nor hear from Rick. One day I called him but got no answer. It was strange as apparently none of his other friends or family had heard from him. I called again and again I got nothing but the phone beeps as an answer.

Unfortunately I didn’t have Kate’s number nor did I know for sure where she lived. A strange, choking feeling grew within my stomach that something had happened to Rick and she was involved.

Then one day, after the police had started looking for my friend, I got a call.

“Norman, it’s Kate here.” she said and I could perceive she had been crying.

“Hey Kate. How are you? Heard from Rick? We’re terribly worried.”

A few silenced moments followed and after a long sob, she went on.

“Yes, that’s precisely what I wanted to tell you. Something happened and it’s my fault... will you come to my place so we can talk please?”

My hate squirmed within me but I repressed my willingness to shout at her and demand to know what she had done to my friend. She sounded disturbed and I didn’t want to add to it. At least not before I found out what had happened.

“Sure, just need your address and I’ll be right there.”

“I’ll send you the location. Please don’t bring anyone with you. I’m so scared and the last thing I need is the police around.”

I sensed she was hiding something but I did as she asked. If she had somehow kidnapped Rick, I didn’t want to mess it up and have her harm him.

Her place was on the opposite side of the city, in a fancy neighbourhood, I observed. Her building had a porter who called her for permission to allow me in. Even he looked weird. Strangely subservient to her. I took the lift and exited on the last floor. To my surprise she was already there waiting for me. Her curly brown impeccable hair falling down her shoulders and back, her skin paler than usual, her blue eyes glowing like diamonds. But what disturbed me most was her lips. Blood red lips. And I really mean blood red, that wasn’t lipstick.

“Kate... are you ok?” I asked as her eyes cut through me.

“Come.” was the only word she said and she grabbed my hand. I shivered. It was icy cold, as if she were dead.

Nothing would have prepared me for what followed. Not even my worst nightmares. My stomach churned and my legs failed when I saw my poor friend Rick sitting on a chair, tied and his head hanging down. There was blood dripping from his neck. I stumbled as Kate pushed me and slammed the door behind us.

“What have you done to Rick?” I yelled when I recovered some of my strength. “What are you?”

“I’m sorry, Norman.” she said. Her face didn’t change a thing, no emotion at all.

Rick moaned in his slumber, trying to raise his head but unable to speak.

“They want him. They want his life and blood.” she carried on.

“What? What are you talking about?”

“My kind. He is delicious, I’ve had his blood too, irresistible.” and she took her fingers to her lips. The stain they left was the proof it was blood. I swallowed hard.

“We’re vampires, Norman.”

Instinctively I looked around. Why did she say we?

“But I have fallen for Rick. You may not believe so because you hate me, but that’s true. I don’t want him to die.”

I couldn’t grasp. Nothing made sense. I just knew my head was spinning and I dropped my hands in the closest chair lest I fainted. Hell knew what she could do to me.

“So why did you call me? Just let him live.” I mumbled.

“I can’t, I need someone to replace Rick. That’s what I promised them.”

And it all made sense. Whoever they were, they needed a victim to swap for Rick. And this horrible creature had decided I’d be the one.

“Do you love Rick, Norman? How loyal are you?” she asked as she seductively placed her hand on my cheek. It was cold, so cold.

I couldn’t say a thing. I was sure she was casting some kind of evil spell on me but I couldn’t break it.

“Do you love Rick? Would you die for Rick?”

I closed my eyes and dropped on my knees. Her hand was now on my head. I heard Rick mumble again.

“Yes.” I said. That wasn’t my voice. Or if it was it had a will of its own as my brain kept shouting no.

“Very well.” she said. And her face finally changed. She grinned, rejoicing in my torment. I felt a sharp pain on my neck as my whole body dropped on the floor. I heard Rick shout my name, as if coming back to life while I got more and more feeble.

When I woke up, all was darkness around me. They were gone. I didn’t know where I was. I didn’t even know if I was still alive.
